Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

It’s no secret that the dry air of winter can wreak havoc on your skin. Cold and windy weather can leave your skin feeling raw, itchy, and irritated, while indoor heat takes moisture from the air and from your skin. Here are some tips to keep in mind when it comes to effective skincare.

Invest in a humidifier

Using a humidifier in your office or at home adds moisture to the air and keeps your skin hydrated. Consider purchasing a humidifier for the rooms that you spend the most time in, especially your bedroom.

Turn down the heat

When it’s cold outside, the first thing you want to do is turn up the thermostat. Central heat can actually make your house even drier. Set the thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees fahrenheit to maintain healthy skin.

Get out of the shower

It can be tempting to take a long, hot shower in the winter, but it can be damaging to your already dry skin. It is better to take a 5- to 10- minute warm shower or bath. Avoid using hot water when washing your hands too. Cooler water is as effective at removing germs and is less irritating to the skin.

Choose fragrance free cleansers

Choosing the right cleanser is crucial. Some soap can make your skin worse, drying it out and making it itchy. Instead, choose a fragrance-free, moisturizing cleanser. Make sure it says “fragrance-free” because “unscented” can still include fragrances. You can also choose to use less soap in the winter to keep your skin healthy.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

For dry skin, the most obvious solution is to moisturize. This is of utmost importance during the winter months. Lotions are better in warm, humid environments, so choose a cream or ointment instead. While hand washing is crucial during cold and flu season, constant washing can cause soft skin to dry out painfully. Make sure to re-moisturize after each wash.
