Four Key Silhouttes for Spring 2012

By Michelle Wamego:

A change of season will soon be upon us, fresh life outdoors and clean breezes through our windows… so why not infuse your wardrobe with a new shape (or a few) to freshen up some of your staples!

There are four key silhouettes seen in the Spring shows this year. Those would be the Boxy Jacket, the knife pleated A-line Skirt, the Peplum Top, and a long Maxi Skirt. Now for a few suggestions on what other items, you may already have some, to pair with the new.

The Boxy Jacket: has a very utilitarian look this season and will do best paired with a soft shirt, and a high-waisted short or skinny jean. The best shoes to pair with this look would be sporty look like a bootie, heel, or sneaker (leave the ballet flats out on this one). Wear this look with a utilitarian style handbag, like a tote or structured Hobo bag.

The Knife Pleated A-line Skirt: definitely has a ladylike look! Pair this flattering skirt with a long sleeve soft feminine blouse or a Classic Cardigan. Shoes should also have the classic lady like pump or slight kitten heel; ballet flats or even a flirty oxford looks great. Don’t wear a platform shoe as this will look to weigh down the sweet feminine style. Keep the handbag small and classic too! Best jewelry choice this season is statement earrings.

The Peplum Top: This look has a classic 50”s nipped waist look. It can be very flattering to defining a bit of waist when one desires a little help. This top is best paired with an elongated bottom like a pencil skirt or narrow cropped pants. The look can be both feminine or edgy, however you want to play it. Wedge booties, platform heels, or ankle strap shoes work nicely. For a handbag grab a clutch or cross body bag, but stay away from a backpack. Great look to show off a rhinestone collar necklace

The Maxi Skirt: this season was seen mostly paired with a Western style shirt or a biker jacket. Definitely for your more casual days. For shoes, go with a shorter Western style boot or gladiator sandal. For your handbag the clutch, cross body bag or hobo style works well for this look too.  Pair a statement belt with this look.
