How to Pack for a Trip

Summertime = vacation time!

Whether you’re going to Florida to soak up some sun or heading to Eureka Springs to peruse a few vintage shops, summer is a great time to take a trip somewhere to relax and enjoy. No matter where you go, what is one thing you have to do before you leave? Pack.

Here’s a simple packing guide to ensure everything you need makes it into your bag!

1. Make a List

Make a list FD

Try to think about what you will be doing on your trip. Are you going to the beach? If so, you’ll need a swimsuit (or something to swim in), a towel, sunscreen etc. Are you going to Seattle? (I am!) You’ll need some comfy shoes to walk in, a varied wardrobe as it could be cool + rainy or nice + sunny (check the weather), a camera for all the sights etc.

Not to mention all of the other necessities:

  • Shampoo + conditioner
  • Toothbrush + toothpaste
  • Hair Brush
  • Makeup
  • Socks + undies

You get the idea. You need all of these items, but they are easily forgotten while scrambling around packing for your trip. I’ve forgotten my toothbrush more times than I can remember! Sitting down to make a list is a simple + quick thing you can do to assure you pack everything you need.

2. Plan Your Outfits

Plan Your Outfits FD

Planning your outfits will make packing for your trip a million times easier! Think of what you will be doing each day of your trip, and plan an outfit that you will enjoy wearing and that is appropriate for whatever you have planned. Going sightseeing? Something comfortable – including comfortable shoes – would be your best option. Maybe that’s your favorite maxi dress or your favorite cut-offs and a tee, either way identifying that before you pack will make sure you don’t overload your suitcase.

While outfit planning, try including multiple items that go together. If all pieces packed match, you can create multiple outfits with a limited amount of clothing. Also, feel free to wear an item more than once. If you only plan on wearing jeans a few times on your trip, you may only need one pair as opposed to three.

3. Grab Travel Size

Travel Size FD

Remember that shampoo + conditioner you put on your list? Grabbing your bottle from the shower might not be the best use of space. Using travel sized shampoo + conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant etc. will free up space in your bag and are easily picked up at the store if you happen to run out while on your vaca. If you’ll be staying at a hotel, you could probably even skip the shampoo + conditioner.

4. Roll Your Clothes

Roll Your Clothes

You’ve heard this a million times, I’m sure, but it works! Lay two or three articles of clothing together, smooth them out and roll them like you would roll a sleeping bag. This will free up space in your bag for that extra outfit or pair of shoes.

5. Pack Heavy Items on the Bottom

Heavy Items FD

Speaking of extra shoes… Placing your extra shoes and other heavy items in the bottom of your bag will make it easier to transport your luggage. Pro tip: place your shoes in a shower cap to keep the dirty bottoms of your shoes off of your packed clothing.

6. Keep Important Items with You

Important items FD

Luggage can get lost. It’s just a part of travelling. Be sure to keep all important items, like your plane tickets, passport, hotel reservations, money etc. with you, to make sure you have it when needed, should your bag get lost.

After all items on your list are rolled up, packed and checked off – you’re ready for your trip! Hey, have a great time!
